Stress and the Learning Process

Stress tends to be thought of as an adult problem, if not preoccupation these days. For years many doctors didn't even recognise its existence. But that's all changing now as our knowledge of brain chemistry improves. Today we can give chapter and verse on what stress is.

Put simply, stress triggers our fight or flight response, a reactive, automatic defence mechanism which gives us extra energy to fight or flee any given emergency via a burst of adrenaline.

The Brain
The brain's control centre, the Limbic system, contains four major elements. One of these is the Hypothalamus, sensitive to any outside danger which could result in physical or emotional hurt.

The Hypothalamus immediately signals the Pituitary gland which in turn signals the adrenaline glands which release up to 30 hormones, one of which is cortisol, too much of which damages the immune system leading to colds and flu at best.

Major Energy Boost
These extra hormones are pure energy and are used as an extra burst of speed for escape, or to give us extra and sometimes extraordinary strength to fight the danger. (There are many recorded incidents of small women lifting huge weights to free trapped children for example, or men tackling fierce animals to save their partners or children.)

Other examples of heroism are accompanied by the phrase, it all happened so fast. And of course, that's the clue. Our reaction to the event is governed at a subconscious level and therefore at a speed far beyond normal conscious thought processes. The rush of adrenaline is instant and our consequent reactions are equally instant and out with our control.

Anxiety
Stress can manifest itself as anxiety or secondary stage tension. Females and young boys tend to be anxious whereas older males hold their anxiety in check i.e. fake it, leading them into the more harmful 'tension' stage. Which is one reason I'm sure why males on average live up to five years less than females.

Tension and anxiety in most children however begins with their parents, especially the mother. Show me a school failure or underachiever and I will show you an anxious child who has an anxious mother. The child picks up the tension and/or anxiety from the parents at a subconscious level.

The following questions now arise. How does this anxiety affect the child? And, what can be done about it?

Bedwetting
Anxiety can affect the child in a variety of ways. One obvious example is bed-wetting. Less than 1% of bed-wetters have a physical problem, it's virtually always anxiety of some sort of another which creates so much tension that the bladder cannot be fully opened while the child is awake. When the child sleeps, that part of the brain which controls the bladder 'switches off. Muscles relax and the water flows uncontrollably.

This doesn't mean that the anxious child sleeps well, on the contrary, anxiety creates havoc with sleep patterns and this in turn affects the child's ability to function properly. First of all, the child can be tired and listless next day.

Assimilating Information
Secondly, we use sleep to make sense of events which happened during the day, that includes making sense of what we have learned during the day. If we don't fully assimilate the days learning, our decks are cluttered for the next days learning and that makes future assimilation even more difficult. Multiply that over a period of weeks and months and you can see how easily it is to fall behind in the learning process.

Expectations
It's understandable but completely wrong to imagine that if someone is failing to pick up the basics like spelling, tables and reading that they must be lacking in intelligence. Most learning, especially early learning is done at the subconscious level via a process known as Ontogenesis. For example, we don't learn to speak formally we pick it up as we develop. Equally, other major players in the learning process also work at the level of the subconscious, for example belief systems, in this case self-belief and self-confidence.

The expectations of others affect our own expectations and as you will read in future articles, these expectations are extremely powerful forces. They can drive us on to higher things or they can limit us for the rest of our lives. Happily they can also be altered. The point is they have to be recognised. Unrealistic expectations, for example parents demanding too much of a child before the child is ready, will drive up the child's anxiety ratings which will have the exact opposite affect which the parent is trying to achieve for the child.

Intellectual Development
Recent research by Professor Howard Gardner of Harvard Psychology Department has identified 8 different types of intelligence in all of us, two on the left side of the brain, what I call the masculine intelligence and two on the right, which I call the feminine intelligence. Masculine intelligence is straight line and sequential in nature, i.e. mechanical. It is relatively simple to develop and most of its work is already being taken over by computers. The vastly more complex feminine intelligence is what gives us our humanity and will never be matched by anything other than a living computer, if such a thing can ever be devised.

The point here is that left brain children, especially boys will appear to soar ahead on in the academic field leaving their right brain counterparts floundering in their wake. At this point parents, especially left brain fathers might panic. They begin to put major pressures on their right brain sons to stop being so 'lazy', get some work done and stop messing about with all that arty farty rubbish, without realising that their right brain sons were infinitely more intelligent than they were themselves. With the correct training, i.e. using Wholebrain Teaching methods their children could easily begin to master the basics and make considerable progress across the academic map.

Know Your Child
First of all, all humans are programmed to learn, but we are not all programmed to learn the same things or in the same way. Indeed, the modern workforce is expected to continually update its information throughout its working life and this will be the case for generations to come.

Learning for life is no longer an empty slogan but a reality. So if your child seems a bit slow at times, encourage and stimulate by all means, but do not force, panic or show alarm or you will create growing anxieties in your child which, as we have seen, will actually prevent your child from learning.

Look for the signs of right brain dominance. The most obvious is left-handedness. Most left handers, certainly everyone I've ever met, are right brain dominant. Right brain children tend to be dreamy and unworldly. They will remember tunes better than words, will be sensitive and intuitive, people orientated and caring. They are far more likely to be affected by any form of row in the house than their left brain counterparts, but will be especially hurt and confused if the shouting is directed at them.

They are delicate flowers and should be handled with care, loads of love and affection. They thrive on intellectual and emotional stimulation and the attention of adults. All children should be treated with respect, but right brain children especially; they are very perceptive and are not easily fooled; though they might allow you to think they have been.

Right brain intelligence wont accept that 4(2a - 3b) + (2d + 3c) = x elephants - 77p unless they know why and what for, whereas the left brain will happily accept it if told to and learn the why's and wherefores later on. Left brain intelligence is one dimensional and operates in a narrow range whereas right brain intelligence thinks wide and deep and wants to know everything.

Physical and Emotional Development
Linked to intellectual development and a crucial part of it is the development of the body and the child's emotions. Each is linked to the child's self esteem and self-confidence and general feelings of self worth.

It is now well documented that children with low self esteem and poor self confidence are slow learners. Spoon feeding children and keeping them in a 'safe' environment (the home, the car, at mum's side wherever they go etc) is actually killing them physically and emotionally. Never in history have so many children been overweight or at best, unfit. Never before have children been so cautious and in many cases frightened about life.

In our efforts to protect and preserve our children we have in fact been slowly strangling the life forces in them. This in turn produces stress, which affects the learning process but more importantly it affects their ability to mature emotionally. It produces weak men who in turn are less able to help their own children to develop. We are in the middle of a vicious circle which we must break and soon.

Dyslexia and its Signs
Finally, a word on dyslexics and defence mechanisms Most, if not all dyslexics are right brain dominant, dyslexia being an underdevelopment of the left hemisphere and a dysfunction between left and right hemispheres. The left hemisphere organises our thinking and our information, by paying attention to the details of a subject.
Some of the signs that your child may be dyslexic to some extent or another:

1. Difficulty distinguishing between left and right.

2. Difficulty mastering the technique of tying shoe laces or buttoning coats or shirts/blouses.

3. Learning anything in sequence for example: Days of the week; Months of the year; the Alphabet.

4. Writing d instead of b and vice versa.

5. Short term memory problems (99.9% due to anxiety.)

Defence Mechanisms
To combat problems within their lives your child's subconscious will develop defences to keep the trauma of failure to a minimum e.g. 'laziness'; withdrawal; selective deafness; defiance; truancy; to name but a few. The Fear of Failure in itself is a major obstacle to learning. Fear of letting you, the parents down. Letting the teacher down, letting themselves down in front of adults they respect and need respect from, and of course, from their peers. They would rather die than look stupid in front of their peers.

Conclusion
Children can be even more affected by stress than adults can. What's more they pick up our stress and develop their own from it. Stress interferes with the short-term memory, which is electrical in form and very easily disrupted. It's housed in the Limbic System and is the brain's 'clearing house' or control centre. All information flows in and out of the Limbic System. Stress interrupts the flow of information in and out of the centre, thus learning and memory is disrupted. It affects all of us this way, but especially children and especially those very sensitive right brain boys.

Solutions: The Edinburgh Techniques
To combat stress in children, Brian Hill adapted and developed two psychotherapeutic techniques especially for students, The Magic Garden and The Study Relaxer. Soon young clients were being brought to the Edinburgh Centre from all over the UK. The Magic Garden is a simple but powerful piece of therapy aimed at those students under 12 years old. The Study Relaxer is for all students from the age of 12 and over. Either can be downloaded in minutes from the Edinburgh Techniques site.

Both techniques ware designed to relax the students, allowing for a good wholesome night's sleep. They build confidence and self esteem and generally create the correct atmosphere for students to learn and assimilate new information and of course, remember and use information already learned, especially during exams.

As a secondary issue, The Magic Garden also stops bedwetting, nightmares and sleepwalking within 7 to 10 days.

Brian Hill MA (Edin) is an Educationalist, formerly at the Edinburgh Centre for Accelerated Learning and the Stress Management Centre in Harley Street, London. He is a specialist in Accelerated Learning and Stress Management.

In the 80's he developed a range of Whole-brain Learning Techniques to help dyslexics and slow learners who came to his Centre from all over the UK. In the mid 90's he wrote the Techniques up and they have been selling ever since over the Net. From 1997 to Dec 2004 he licensed Classroom Resources to sell his Techniques throughout UK schools.

Those techniques and more can now be downloaded from the new website: http://www.edinburghtechniques.co.uk

Key Points of the Article

1. Stress affects children even more than adults because they are less able to handle its effects than we are.

2. Most childhood stress is caused by adult expectations, adult disapproval, or even parental stress picked up at a subconscious level by the child. This is particularly true of boys and mothers.

3. Stress interferes with signals entering or leaving the brain. Thus learning is a major victim of stress, especially in children.

4. Children in particular, need a happy, loving environment in which to learn.

5. Feeding the child's physical and emotional needs is paramount to its intellectual development.

6. Signs of stress can stretch from withdrawal to tantrums in younger children. Tiredness could indicate broken sleep patterns due to stress.

7. A happy, supportive, unconditional loving atmosphere is the best cure for childhood stress.

8. The combination of Stress, broken sleep, frustration with failure in the learning process and low self esteem and poor self confidence caused by this failure leads to can lead to severe unhappiness in the child which can accentuate the withdrawal symptoms over the years or explode into violent episodes.

Case Study

One of my earliest clients was a 12 year old girl from Fife who was in special needs. She had a very low IQ, as denoted by her low pitched voice and slow speech. She couldn't go out on her own. She threw tantrums, wet the bed, had nightmares and regularly walked in sleep. She was making virtually no academic progress and the parents were led to believe this was not likely to improve much over the years.

I adapted a simple visualisation technique to her needs, The Magic Garden, and made a tape for her which she played nightly. Within 10 days her nocturnal problems were over. She had been suffering from acute anxiety which prevented her from learning; this further lowered her confidence and self esteem. The Magic Garden tape broke the cycle of anxiety, non learning, low self esteem etc and allowed her to begin to move forward. That, combined with other ECAL Wholebrain Learning Techniques, saw her make improvements that her parents had been told would be impossible by professionals in conventional educational psychology.

A para from her father's letter of March 1998 can be seen in the testimonials page: http://www.edinburghtechniques.co.uk

Signs Your Children May Be Associating With Or Involved in Gangs

Signs Your Children May Be Associating With Or Involved in Gangs

As parents we want to protect or daughters, and sons from gangs and the violence that surrounds them. The problem is, must of us don't know anything about gangs or their culture. What indicators should we be looking for? How can we tell the difference between normal teenage behavior, and the behavior connected with involvement with gangs and gang members?

This is a difficult task. You need to learn about gang's in general, colors' used by gangs to identify themselves. Hand signs and gestures that gang member's use to identify themselves and the gang/gang set, that they identify with. Style of clothing, and in the case of female's, the style they wear their hair, and make-up. Know the difference between tattoo's for adornment and tattoo's that represent gangs.

You must also know your daughter. Her likes and dislikes, her personality, and her friends. In other words, you must have a baseline to compare prior behavior, with behavior that may indicate she is gravitating towards gangs.

The following indicators by themselves can not be taken as indicator's of gang association, but may be normal teenage behavior. However, if you identify a few to a lot of these indicators being present in your daughter, the odds are high she is beginning to associate with gang members.

All female gangs are becoming more prevalent with-in the gang culture, and are on the rise. They are structured the same as male gang's in most cases, and rival their male counterparts in their trend towards violence and crimes, and in some case's are more violent.

As your daughter enters High School and in some cases, Junior High School or Middle School. They find themselves being bombarded with peer pressure. What group to identify with, cheerleaders, geeks, Elmos, skateboarders, dopers, gangsters or any-other group at that school. The hormones are also rising and create an entire set of problems of their own, which all Father's are usually keenly aware of. Then the internal struggle for independence. All of these combined make her very susceptible to gang pressure, and gang involvement.

INDICATORS OF POSSIBLE GANG INVOLVEMENT.

FRIENDS;

Has your daughter stopped associating with her old friends? The kids that she had grown up around and played with on a regular bases. Has she indicated that the old friends no longer share the same interests, or that she has out grown them. No matter the excuse that is given, this is an area of great concern. You must take a good look at her new friend's, male and female alike. Have you met the new friends, do they come to your house to visit, or does your daughter go to their home, or meet them at a particular hang-out? What is the demeanor of the new friend's? Friendly, out going, extremely polite, well mannered, or very quite, angry, sullen, secretive, stand offish. Contrary to popular belief, some of the most violent gang member's that I have met can appear very polite, well mannered, and extremely likable. Gang member's become very good at fooling parent's, other family member's, school officials and even law enforcement. The best way to identify behaviors are a mixture of going with your gut feeling and by observing their actions when they don't know your watching. Be aware of facial expression, eye movements and the way they carry themselves. This may be your first indicator, as human beings tend to associate with people that have the same goals, cares and concerns. Do the new friends wear gang style clothing and colors? Look for web belts with buckles that may have a gang sign cut in to them. The color of belts, shoes, shoe laces, undershirts, coats, jackets, wrist watch faces, and hats or head gear.

SCHOOL;

Initially, schools were considered out of bounds for gangs. It was a free zone or a safe haven. Gangs were not active in schools. That has changed, gang violence in schools is on the rise. It has become an area for recruitment, a place to display the gangs power, commit crimes and the sale of drugs. Weapons are brought to schools for intimidation and protection. Many children get caught up in gangs at this stage by fear. These are the questions you need to answer. How are your daughter's grades? Have they continued about the same or have they dropped? What is the reason for the change? Family problems, boyfriend problems, problems adjusting to a new school or school environment, fear of change, fear of gangs, or her involvement in gangs? What comments have teacher's made on her attitude and behavior in school? Has her attitude changed suddenly, acting out towards school officials? What does she attribute the change too? They are out to get her, they don't like her, it's just to difficult? Again, know your daughter, compare prior behavior with her current behavior. Talk with teacher's and school officials, get their input. After all, they are the professionals concerning kid's behavior at school.

DRESS;

One of the identifiers of gangs and gang member's and associates is dress. Not only the color, but also the style. This is important to them for several reasons. It identifies them to their own gang member's. After all they do not want to become victims of violence from their own gang and they do not want to commit an act of violence on one of their own members. The reason this is important to them, gang members are prohibited from victimizing their own gang members and their families. Unless it has been authorized by the command structure of the gang. A violation of this code of conduct can result in anything from a verbal reprimand, sever beating, to death.

Secondly, it is a projection of gang influence, and power. After all, if I am driving and see one or two guy's wearing gang colors, I will not be very intimidated, but if I see twenty or thirty of them, I am not going to hang around. Additionally, it has been said by other's, that clothes don't make the man, the man makes the clothes. I see it more as, the clothing represents the image that the man has of himself, or the image he wants other's to see. This ability to identify gang member's and rival gang members can be seen in your local news. If gang members know their target on sight, nothing may be said at all. If they know the target and want their gang to get credit for the hit, they will announce their gang by yelling it out, before, after or during the shooting. If they are out to victimize a rival gang member, but no specific target. They will look to identify them by their dress, gang colors or style of dress. If they can not locate any rival gang member's, but still want to carry out a mission for their gang. They will throw their gang sign at a person on the street that may look like a gang member or that is in a rival gang member's territory. If the person is a member of their gang he will respond with his gang sign and they'll continue on. If the person responds with a rival gangs sign, he will become a victim. Lastly, they may verbally identify their gang affiliation or ask the intended victim, "where you from", "who do you represent", or a question of this type. If the person says no one, or says he represents a rival gang or area, he will be victimized.

What represents gang colors and clothing? It can be any color. CRIPS and BLOODS are represented by Blue and Red respectively. Norteno and Sureno by Red and Blue, Oriental gangs will use, red, blue, yellow and green. Outlaw motor cycle gangs will use red and white, black and white, green and white. You have to investigate, you can contact your local or county law enforcement, schools and local non-profit organization. All of these either have the information, or some sort of community program where this information will be given out as part of a gang awareness program. Style of clothing can be sagging, dragging or bagging. Wearing their pants down around the bottom of their butt, displaying their underwear. Be aware, that skateboarders tend to wear this style also, as do a lot of kids emulating their favorite rap artist. Originally, I first noticed the CRIPS gang members wearing their pants in this fashion, then it spread to other gangs and finally to our pop culture. Personally, I like the style. It's really hard to run or jump over fence's with your pants around your ankles, or running with one hand holding up your pants.

GANG INDICIA;

What is gang indicia? It is anything that represents, or is used by the gang in any form of fashion to educate, communicate, or identify gang member's, or idea's. This is the area that most parent's ignore. Why you may ask? Privacy issue's, trust issue's or the fear of incurring the wrath of their teenager. Some parent's are afraid of what they will find, so they make excuses for not checking their teens, male or females, room's. A parent is responsible to shelter, feed, cloth, educate, take care of and protect their children. Your teenager, in most cases, is not going to tell you, hey, Mom and Dad, I've decided to become a gang member. As a parent it is your duty and responsibility to check your teens room and belongings in order to protect them, period. I don't know how many times, a victim parent's will swear their son or daughter is not a gang member. Most are lying, but some closed their eye's and refused to see the signs. So what are we looking for and where will it be.

First, look at the overall room. color of the walls, posters, drawings or anything hanging or suspended from the walls or ceiling. Is there anything related to gang color's or gang content. A United Farm workers(UFW) flag, red with a black Aztec eagle(or commonly called the HUELGA BIRD) in the middle? Could be an indicator, test your child, ask them what it is and what it means. The original UFW flag was designed by Caesar Chavez's brother, he couldn't draw the Mexican Eagle, so he decided to square off the wings and use the Aztec eagle. It is too long to describe here, but you can contact the United Farm Workers office near you and they will be happy to send you a flyer describing the flag and what each part stands for. Needless to say, your Northern Hispanic gangs took the design of the UFW's flag and began using it as an identifier. You'll see it displayed as a flag or a tattoo. As we continue checking the room, check clothing pockets for notes or signs of drug use. Check inside books, notebooks, magazine's, drawers, diaries, under bed's, mattresses, dressers and any other place you would hide something. Look for gang notes, usually hand printed in micro writing. Micro writing is seven sentences in one line of regular lined notebook paper. It can be folded into a square, or rolled the size of a toothpick. Read their notes and writings. Have they crossed out any letters? For example, a Norteno will cross out the s' in his writing's or use the dollar symbol if typing. It will look like this, "Hey how are you guy$ doing. What$ cracking, home boy$". Be aware of the content of letters and writings. Also note if suddenly your teen has taken an unusual fascination with MAYA or AZTEC writings or symbols. Don't just look at books, read the covers. If you see a book titled, "The Art of War by Sun-Tsu", it is a training aid used by the Norteno gangs and shows their ideas of fighting and discipline. Also, Norteno gang members have been instructed to study books on human nature and how to read human behavior, and keywords used to manipulate people. Again, majority of my work was with Hispanic gangs, so those are the examples I use. The basics apply to all gangs as they are pretty much the same in the manor and style they operate.

Also when your checking their room, look for items' that they should not have. New jewelery, cell phones, or electronics in general. Find out how they got them, where they came from, especially if they don't have the money to buy them. Regarding cell phones, check them often. Who do they call, when are they calling, check out their phone books, how are the names listed and what are the nicknames used. Same with text messages, read them, what are they talking about? Check their computer's, their e-mail, area's they go to on the Internet. As with all of these indicator's, you must have a base line of your daughter's prior behavior to help evaluated her current behavior, is it related to gangs or just a teenage thing. Remember, you will find things that embarrass you and surprise you. Some of these are normal teenage behavior's, taking about sex and boy's and other such topics. Some may not be, talk with your teen about these topics in a general format, don't bring them in put them under a spotlight and interrogate them for hours. They will only learn to hide it better next time.

CHANGES IN BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDE.

This is a tough one. Teenager's are going through a period of change in their lives and are having to learn and adapt to the changes in their bodies and environments. They feel they are old enough to make decisions for themselves, they want independence from the rule of their parents. They want to be their own person. How can you tell the difference's between gang influence's and normal behavior? All teens usually do something stupid at one time or another. The key is if the behavior or attitude continue, even after it has had a negative impact. A teen coming home drunk once, or a teen that comes home drunk or hung-over on a regular basis. Coming home late every now and then, or consistently comes home late and eventually, doesn't come home at all. The normal anger and frustration with parents. Yelling, "you don't understand me", running to their room and slamming the door. As opposed to yelling, running out the front door and not coming home for several day's. Any permanent, negative change in your teens behavior or attitude, is an area of concern.

USE OF ALCOHOL, OR DRUGS.

Male gang members tend to use alcohol, drugs and sex as a recruiting tool. They will have parties, bring in teens they are trying to recruit, and introduce them into this representation of the gangster life style. Female's are an important tool that is used to attract new member's. This is the most dangerous time for your daughter. Gang members will use every trick they know to get your daughter to this party and begin using her as a tool. She may think he likes her, he'll treat her very well, stand up for her and protect her. Eventually, he will convince her to go to the party with him, and to use alcohol or some low key, accepted drug, marijuana. After this initial step, he'll continue to befriend her and increasingly get her to use alcohol and marijuana. He will next, either overtly or covertly, get her to use a drug such as Methamphetamine (Meth). He'll put Meth in her drink without her knowing. When he feels comfortable at this stage he'll begin heavy petting, or even sex with him. Once he feels he has total control of her, he'll make sure she is addicted to the alcohol, drugs or sex. He'll then introduce her to sex at his direction with multiple partners, usually gang members and new recruits. Once she is addicted, used and abused, and no longer appealing for use as a recruitment tool she will be kicked out to fend for herself. Prostitution, stealing or any other crime to pay for her new addictions. What do parents look for? There will be signs of alcohol and drug use, learn what they are. Marijuana, red bloodshot eye's, giggling, munchies. Meth will have the signs of twitching or uncontrollable talking, jerky movements, can't stand still or keep one train of thought for any period of time. Is keyed up for extended periods of time, followed by a crash, sleeping for long periods of time or extremely difficult to wake up. When your daughter reaches the age of dating or going out be sure and warn her, about the danger of alcohol, drugs and gangs. She is not to drink anything that she does not open herself, no matter how much she trust's the people she is with. If she leaves her drink unattended, throw it away and get another one. Never, drink out of someone else's drink. Additionally, when you check her room, look for glass pipes, lighter's, empty piece's of plastic wrap, which may or may not have a crystal type residue. Look for straws cut about two inches in length, or coffee stir sticks. Also check your teens hands. Meth when smoked, using a glass pipe usually results in contact burns on the thumb and index finger.

In-conclusion

Remember you are the parent. It is your responsibility to protect your child. Gang members have a saying, you may see it as initials, MOB. It stands for Money Over Bitches. That is how they view women, tools to advance their gang agenda. Many of the gang member's I have talked with have no compunction about using women and tend to see them as property and income. They'll tell them they love them, they'll have their children. Once a girl has their child she is viewed as theirs. They will have her raising the kids and working two jobs to support him, while he parties with gang friends and has sex with whom every he wants. Just to give you an idea of how brainwashed some of their women are. In a recorded call from jail, a female told her male gang friend that she would have oral sex with any gang member in good standing, that was her obligation and she would swallow, or do anything to help the soldiers in the cause.

The gang life style only leads to two places. DEATH and PRISON.

What Are Fine Motor Skills in Preschoolers?

What Are Fine Motor Skills in Preschoolers?

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Fine motor skills is a term which mean small muscle development, as opposed to large motor skills which would be large muscle development such as with the legs and arms. When children run and play they are developing and strengthening their large motor skills which also include balance and coordination. When children play with small toys or crayons and use their fingers to play with manipulatives and puzzles this is what fine motor skill development is referring to.

Why are these skills so important? Young children are learning everyday how to control their bodies through play and movement. It does not come naturally to a child. If you ever observe a helpless baby flailing around and making jerky arm and leg movements you will witness poor muscle development (large and small). Those movements are very important as they are strengthening the muscles of the baby and as days and weeks go by they become a bit stronger. As babies go through various stages of physical growth they reach many milestones: holding their head up, rolling over, sitting up, crawling, walking, running, etc.

As babies approach the toddler and preschool years they have achieved a good level of large muscle skill development and their focus then turns more to improving their fine motor skills. They become interested in playing with small things like puzzles and manipulatives like Legos and blocks and crayons. This natural progression results in children being able to hold a pencil properly by the time they reach kindergarten but they need several years of practice prior to that milestone (and not every child achieves this on time for school entry).

The preschool educational setting should be filled with endless opportunities for children to practice tuning up those fine motor skills. The body parts that are used in fine motor skills are the little parts such as the fingers, toes, eyes, tongue, lips and hands/feet. These body parts in conjunction with the senses of touch, taste, smell, sound and sight work together to grow manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, manipulation skills and control, sensory perception (touch), and ocular motor control (eyes can follow and focus).

What kind of activities for 2, 3 4, and 5 year olds are effective and appropriate for developing small motor skills? There are many! A good point to remember is that every child develops on his or her own timetable andno two children of the same age will be exactly at the same skill level. There is a wide range of variance and that is normal. Here are just ten great activities for kids that will allow children to practice and grow while they play. If you want to add to this list please add your comment below to share with other caregivers.

1. Play Doh: is one of the best tools for small muscle development. Kneading and squeezing the dough are the best muscle developers. Have a basket or shoe box filled with tools such as plastic knives and forks, popsicle sticks, rolling pins, cookie cutters etc. available for making shapes.

2. Lacing: You can buy lacing cards commercially or make your own. The child threads yarn or shoe laces through holes on the card. The cards can have patterns, letters, numbers or pictures but the younger children may not be able to lace a pattern and will just lace it up into a great stringy criss-cross. Children also enjoy lacing beads or pasta onto the shoelace to make a necklace. Tip: To create a shoelace from regular yarn, wrap the ends of the yarn tightly with tape or dip the ends into candle wax and allow them to cool and harden for easier lacing.

3. Scissors Skills: (child safety scissors) This is definitely one of the more difficult skills to master but it is still great for practice. Younger children usually cannot coordinate this at all but the 4 and 5 year olds can manage and will eventually be able to cut out a black-line shape with practice.

4. Pincer grasp: Tongs, tweezers or clothespins are great for squeezing open and closed to pick up things, it strengthens the finger and hand muscles. You can have the child try to transfer cotton balls from one bowl to another or make up relay games where the children have to race to pick up a scarf with the tongs and place it at a finish line.

5. Tracing: (Use salt, sand, shaving cream or pudding) Have child use fingers or a popsicle stick to trace in salt that is sprinkled on a cookie sheet or paper plate. Call out a letter or number and help them trace it. Another fun tracing activity is to pair children up and have one partner trace a letter or number on the other's back and have them guess what it is. Kids love that one! Lots of giggles and tickles!

6. Scribbling! Yes purposeful scribbling. Markers, crayons, pencils. Create an art gallery of scribble drawings.

7.Eye-droppers: Eye-droppers can be used to mix and learn about colors. Place water into all the separate spaces of a cupcake pan (6 or 12). Put a few drops of different colors of food coloring (blue, green red, yellow) into only 3 or 4 of the wells and allow the children to mix and change the colors by using the eye-dropper to change the remaining wells of water.

8. Spray Bottles: Fill up spray bottles with water and allow children to squirt anything they want outside. Water is harmless and will just disappear. This is fun for warm weather. If you have snow outside put food coloring into the water and let them spray the snow different colors. This makes a very cool looking snowman.

9. Finger Plays and Finger Painting! (obvious right?)

10. Everyday Living Skills: Dressing themselves (buttons, zippers, buckles, shoelaces), helping to set the table or pour their juice (expect and even anticipate spills- but they will never learn if they can't practice!), help mom bake cookies (mix and stir and measure), helping dad fix stuff (hammers and screw drivers and nails), brushing teeth and singing songs!

These are age-appropriate activities for 2 year olds through 5 year olds and all are adaptable to various skill levels. These are fun developmental activities for any time and make great rainy day activities that keep little hands busy!
